WHAT: THE WORLD OF POP ICONS exhibition opening

 

Please join us for the opening of an exhibition of global music icons by renowned Czech photographer Marek Smejkal, who presents his exclusive concerts photos of Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Kiss, R.E.M., Nick Cave, Erasure and Ozzy Osbourne from their concerts in Prague over the past twenty years. This photo exhibition also begins a broader discussion on the influence of pop icons in Czech and American culture. Opening remarks by David Gainer, Cultural Attaché, U.S. Embassy and Michael Kocáb, musician and politician.

Participants will include Robert STUTMAN, former Special Agent, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), via video link from the USA, Johannes VAN DEN HOOGEN, Assistant Legal Attaché for the FBI, US Embassy in Prague, Mark KIRBY, Supervisory Special Agent, US Embassy in Prague and Krystof KOZAK, Assistant Professor at the Department of American Studies, Charles University.

WHAT: THE OBAMA REPORT CARD: AN EVALUATION OF THE FIRST NINE MONTHS OF THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION lecture

Please join us at the American Center on Thursday October 8th for a lecture by Distinguished American Professor Max Hilaire who will evaluate President Barack Obama's first nine months as President. Dr. Hilaire will focus on both his successes and failures in domestic and foreign policies. Dr. Hilaire is professor and chair of the Department of Political Science at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, and director of the Political Leadership Institute. He earned his PhD from Columbia University in New York, and he is a two time Fulbright Scholar in Nigeria and the Czech Republic.

WHAT: THE NAKED CITY film screening

Based on a story by Malvin Wald, The Naked City (1948) portrays the police investigation that follows the murder of a young model. A veteran cop is placed in charge of the case and he sets about, with the help of other beat cops and detectives, finding the girl's killer. The Naked City producer Mark Hellinger's voice was used for the film's narration. Hellinger died of a sudden heart attack after a preview of the movie.

WHAT: VIEW FROM IRAQ BY AMBASSADOR CAMERON MUNTER lecture

The Association of Americans Resident Overseas (AARO) Prague is privileged to host a very special event. Our guest speaker will be Ambassador Cameron Munter, Political Military Minister Counselor of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Until summer 2009, Ambassador Munter was U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, notably during the attacks on the US Embassy in Belgrade 2008, where his prompt actions were praised in safeguarding the wellbeing of US Citizens. In 2006 he completed a six month posting in Mosul, where he headed the U.S. government's first Provincial Reconstruction Team in Iraq. Munter has also served in Prague, Warsaw, Bonn, as well as in Washington. He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Cornell, a Master's and a Doctorate in History from Johns Hopkins. He has been an AARO Member since 2005. In his current posting, he directs strategic planning and American civil-military coordination during the military drawdown in Iraq. The main part of the event will be followed by a Q & A.

The aim of panel discussion is to take a sober and impartial view into the world of pop icons. Is it about a charisma or talent of a unique personality, or a good marketing promotion ? Does there exist an instruction manual how to create a music star, and has that changed over the past twenty years? Can celebrities change the world ? Representatives from the music industry will look for answers and describe this phenomenon.

WHAT: COMPATRIOTS IN THE USA AND THE ESTABLISHMET OF THE CZECHOSLOVAK REPUBLIC book launch

Launch of the book entitled “COMPATRIOTS IN THE USA AND THE ESTABLISHMET OF THE CZECHOSLOVAK REPUBLIC” on the eve of the October 28, the 91st anniversary of the foundation of the independent Czechoslovak state. The English version was published in August by the Czech Ministry of Defense with cooperation from the U.S. Embassy in Prague. Authors Václav Vondráška and František Hanzlík will be present to discuss their work.

 

 The event will be held in Czech.
