It is June, which means another fantastic Prague Writers Festival, part of which is held at the American Center. Do not miss two discussions with world renowned authors and a film screening connected to the festival. As the Tip of the Month we are offering another session in our popular multimedia series about American states and cities. This time we are going to invite you to Chicago. Famous Czechs such as Boris Hybner will speak about their love for the windy city. Chicago is also our theme for our June movie series.

WHAT:    Prague Writers Festival Movie   film screening

In cooperation with the Prague Writers Festival, we would like to invite you to a screening of "Crumb."  This unique 1994 documentary takes the viewer on a darkly ironic and hillarious ride into the world of Robert Crumb, a legendary and prolific cartoonist who became one of major pioneers of underground comics, just as his often explicit drawing became a common headache for politically correct activists.  Through interviews with the man himself, his closest relatives, girlfriends and collaborators, a colorful and unusual image of the mind of this extremely talented person arises.  

R. Crumb will visit Prague for the Prague Writers Festival and will appear at the American Center in person on June 11.

The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

WHAT:     Searching for Europe from the Iron Curtain to the Global crisis lecture

Lecture by historian and political analyst PhDr. Ivan Kulhánek, CSc. His new book, “Stumbling over the Future,” focuses on European history from the 1815 Vienna Congress to contemporary times.

 The lecture will be held in Czech.

The U.S. Embassy is pleased once again to sponsor the Prague Writers’ Festival (www.pwf.cz) and present the following renowned writers, who will discuss politics, identity and culture in their work: Anne Waldman (USA), Mourid Barghouti (Palestine) and Yang Lian (China/Great Britain). Moderator: Miloš Calda, Charles University. 

The conversation will be held in English.

WHAT:    Chicago Movies Series   film screening

The original 1932 version of “Scarface”, directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson. Big Louis Costillo, the last of the old-style gang leaders, is slain, and his former bodyguard Tony Camonte is taken into custody. Since Costillo's body has never been found, the police have to release him, though they strongly suspect Johnny Lovo paid Tony to remove Big Louis. Tony begins taking over the rackets in town with violent enforcement, and he becomes a threat to Johnny and the other bosses unless they work for Tony. Their dissatisfaction and the relentless pursuit of the police push Tony towards a major confrontation.

 The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

WHEN:    Monday, June 22,  5.30 p.m.

WHAT:    Discover Chicago  multimedia program

This multimedia program will include historian František Hanzlík; art historian Otto Urban; performer Boris Hybner; and, via a digital videoconference, Marek Skolil, the Czech consul in Chicago. Actors from Pardubice will perform parts of the hit musical “Chicago.” The program will also highlight Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games

The program will be held in Czech.

WHAT:     American Foreign Policy from Central Europe Perspective   seminar

Seminar in cooperation with CESES (Center for Social and Economic Strategies) will focus on the Obama Administration’s approach towards Foreign Policy.

WHEN:    6 p.m.

WHAT:    Chicago Movies Series   film screening

John Landis´ 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.”  After the release of Jake Blues from prison, he and brother Elwood go to visit the old home where they were raised by nuns. They learn the church stopped its support and will sell the place to the education authority, and the only way to keep the place open is if the $5000 tax on the property is paid within 11 days. The brothers decide to put their blues band back together and raise the money by staging a big gig. Will they make it in time?

 The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

 Admission to all events is free of charge.
