WHAT:     SCHOLARSHIP FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS     presentation

 

Open Society Fund Prague program presentation. The Secondary School Scholarship program is a unique program which gives students of secondary schools (aged 16 and 17) the opportunity to spend an entire academic year at an independent school in the UK or the US. More information on www.osf.cz .

This lecture by Mgr. Nina Bosničová, Ph.D. is the third in a series of lectures entitled ROUTES OF AMERICAN FEMINISM, presented at the American Center from October to December.

WHAT:     ON THE FRONT OF THE COLD WAR  exhibition opening and lecture

Benjamin Frommer, U.S. Fulbright scholar at the Institute of Contemporary History and professor of history at Northwestern University, will present a lecture entitled “The Cold War: An American Perspective 20 Years after 1989" as we celebrate the opening of our new exhibition On the Front of the Cold War (Czechoslovakia 1948 – 1956). The exhibition is held in cooperation with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes

 

The exhibition opening will be in Czech and the lecture in English.

WHAT:     NASA’s FIFTY YEARS OF UPS AND DOWNS   lecture

James Deutsch , author and curator at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., will speak about the successes and failures of NASA during its long history. Professor Deutsch was the chief curator responsible for planning and producing of the program on NASA at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2008.

 

 The lecture will be held in English.

WHAT:     THE NAKED CITY     film screening

Based on a story by Malvin Wald, The Naked City (1948) portrays the police investigation that follows the murder of a young model. A veteran cop is placed in charge of the case and he sets about, with the help of other beat cops and detectives, finding the girl's killer. This highly influential documentary thriller was shot on location in New York's teeming streets.

 

 The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

WHAT:     WOODSTOCK: NOW AND THEN       film screening

Barbara Kopple, two-time American Academy Award winning filmmaker, will present her most recent film, WOODSTOCK: NOW AND THEN, and talk about her illustrious career. WOODSTOCK: NOW AND THEN is a feature length documentary which examines Woodstock from the perspectives of not only the musicians who graced the stage, but also the fans who gathered in mass, the concert promoters who risked everything and countless others whose unique viewpoints help paint a new and vivid tapestry of the Woodstock experience.

 

Barbara Kopple is a two time Academy Award-winning filmmaker for the documentaries Harlan County, USA (1976) and American Dream (1991). Her other films include Shut Up and Sing (2006), Havoc (2005), A Conversation with Gregory Peck (1999), My Generation (2000), Wild Man Blues (1997), Fallen Champ: The Untold Story of Mike Tyson (1993), and 2009's Woodstock: Now & Then In addition to two Amercican Oscars, Barbara Kopple is the recipient of numerous other awards such as the SilverDocs/Charles Guggenheim Award, New York Women in Film & Television Muse Award, the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, among numerous others.

WHAT:     THE YEAR 1929 AND OTHER CRISES IN THE LIGHT OF THE PRESENT TIME        lecture

Lecture by Pavel Kohout, Director of Strategy, Partners for Life Planning, a.s., who is ranked among the most prominent Czech economists and experts on financial advising.  He was recently a member of NERV/ National Economic Council of the Government.

WHAT:     LADISLAV PELC: AMERICAN INSPIRATION   exhibition opening

Ladislav Pelc and his friends from the music and art circles will open an exhibition inspired by America. Ladislav Pelc, painter and graphic artist, was born in 1951. He started his career when he was 16 years old with illustrations for the book “Knots and Lasso” of a traveler and writer F.A. Elstner. He is the only living Czech painter whose works have been placed on continual exhibition in Kaiserštejnský Palace in Prague.

WHAT:     STRIPES       film screening

Thanks to a run of bad luck and go-nowhere jobs, John (Bill Murray) convinces Russell to join the army so they can get in shape, likening it to a health spa. Once in boot camp, wise guy John tangles with his by-the-book Sgt. and becomes the unofficial leader for his platoon, made up mostly of other misfits and assorted losers. After somehow making it through graduation, they are given a special assignment but, thanks to John's romantic interest in a pretty Military Policewoman, the other men wind up behind the Iron Curtain in the communist Czechoslovakia until John, Russell, their dates and Sgt. Hulka make a daring rescue attempt in explosive style.  Apart from one of the few mentions of a communist-time Czechoslovakia in Hollywood cinematography, the comedy features a very young Bill Murray as John, the main character.

 The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

WHAT:     WOMEN IN ENGINEERING: PERSONAL EXPERIENCES & WORKING OPPORTUNITIES AT GOOGLE  lecture

Petra Popluharova has been working as software engineer at Google Inc., Silicon Valley, since 2005, and she will share her personal insights on America's high-tech industry, as well as its programs which support women and diversity. Software developer Lara Aharkava, a student at the Prague Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, will also share her recent internship experience at Google Inc. in Zurich.

 

 The event will be held in Slovak and Czech.

This program will celebrate the winners of this summer's photo competition, which was based around the theme "The American West Through Your Eyes." Wild life photographer Rostislav Stach will also deliver a lecture entitled "Photographing wildlife in Yellowstone National Park."
