Review by Albert W. Bally

This volume is a timely and well-
illustrated update on the Geology of
Iraq, edited by the chief geologist of the
Geological Survey of Iraq (GEOSURV)
and the senior geological consultant
of BP. The book was written by 16
authors, all participating in a cooperation
of the Iraqi and Czech Geological
Surveys. A geological map of Iraq at
the beginning of the volume serves as a
general reference and an appendix gives
an overview of place names etc.

The first seven chapters summarize
background about the regional tectonic
setting of Iraq within the Northern
Arabian Plate, the Precambrian
basement, the Foreland, the Foothills,
the Zagros Suture, and a review of the
seismicity. The next 10 chapters offer
detailed description of Phanerozoic
Tectono-Stratigraphic Megasequences
that were established by Sharland et al.
(Geoarabia Special Publication 2,
2001). Thus the reader can easily
relate Iraq’s stratigraphy to a much
larger area. Two additional chapters
deal with the details of the Zagros
suture and with magmatism and
metamorphism in Iraq.
